Crossing America (First Stops: From The Badlands to Devil's Tower)

Saturday
July 18, 2015

We woke up and made a "short" drive to the Badlands.
Skeleton Man Walking Dinosaur
The contrast between the rocks and the sky was stunning.
(It looked like we were seeing in stripes.)

While we were driving on the long loop through the Badlands we finally spied prairie dogs. The air was filled with mint.

Afterwards we made the touristy stop at Wall Drug for ice cream.

Then continued across South Dakota to Custer State Park.
Where we spied our first Buffalo.

More prairie dogs.

And some friendly burros.

We made a quick pop-in to Wind Cave before settling down for the night in Custer.

Our morning started bright and early with a hike around Sylvan Lake in Custer Sate Park.

(Yellow-bellied marmots.)

We left on Needles Highway with its crazy curves, tunnels and amazing views of Mount Rushmore.

Before heading into Wyoming.

To Devil's Tower.

Then we crossed into Montana.

True Story:  T fell out of the van in Billings when we stopped for dinner because he forgot that he had tied his shoes together.

We watched the sun set just before we reached our final destination of the day, Red Lodge.  (Where we loved that we got to meet up with a friend from high school.)

We couldn't wait to get into Yellowstone the next day...
