Funnies: Sketches

M sketched these in the van this past week.  I find them endlessly fun.

Cats carrying an umbrella while wearing leggings.  The mouse.  The rain bouncing off the umbrella.  The lack of rain under the umbrella.  Love it.

A dog sheriff directing cat and mouse traffic.  The blowing away umbrella.  A sharp-clawed (apron-wearing) cat with balloons (that's not going to end well).

It's kind-of like a little glimpse into her cat-loving mind.  :)

Five on Friday

1.  We joined a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and had our first meet-the-farmers/workday last weekend.  We get our first fresh produce in 2 weeks!  (Bring on the kale!)

2.  Sometimes we bend the rules--Spiderman wasn't made to just stay on the floor.

3.  Assignment stick-a-branch-in-it complete.

4.  Nature Class gave us the kick in the tush (and the little bins) we needed to start composting.  I'm pretty sure we're about a month away from having a completely full compost bin--we should have some awesome (free) garden dirt next year.
*Bonus note:  Emily is officially one of our heroes.  She did what I couldn't do and pulled tooth number 3. ;)

5.  Cookies "as big as your head" to help cozy-up this dreary Friday.

Fleeting (Pausing to Capture the Moment)

These are back.

Pausing to enjoy them now because they won't be here for long.

Kind-of like these growing little guys...

The Low-Down on What Books/Resources We've Been Using For First Grade This Past Year

Spelling/Phonics

English/Language

Math

Science

US History/Geography

Latin

World History/Geography

Spanish

Typing

{Notes:  We completed the first levels of spelling, language and science sometime in January.  We started the second level of math a little over a month ago.  We recently added in Latin and we're working through it very slowly--it's a great book--T even loves it.  Our FAVORITE subjects are science and math and my personal least favorite (and only one out of all of them that I haven't liked) this year has been the world history book.}

Funnies: The Grandfather Edition

The Sign
M has 4 VERY loose teeth--all in the front.  It's scary--VERY scary.  It's like teeth marionettes in there.  Creeps. Me. Out.

Anyway, we've been trying to convince her to help the process along a little.  She's a bit reluctant.  But she's heard the rumor that Pop has a special method involving strings and doorknobs.

This morning she posted this sign on her door.
Emergency!
Please do not pull my teeth out the Pop way while I am sleeping.
Thank you.

The Shirt
When we paint the small crew outfits themselves in old clothes.  I found this shirt in the closet and put it on Beza--the newest painter in the house.  She looked down and said, "This is a Grandpa shirt."
(The fireworks shirt forever now known as "The Grandpa shirt.")

Because, in fact, it is.
(I think that he might be the only one who still wears it?)

Top Five on Friday: The Long Weekend Away

Last week we were going somewhere and T looked out the window and said, "I wish we could go walk through those woods--it's so beautiful."  Oh, but the ticks--they're back.  I spent a good portion of my childhood playing in the woods--wouldn't it be great if ticks weren't a problem?  Then it occurred to me--I could take them there--where I used to play.  And what a perfect weekend--great weather (that turned into the most frigid May days in recent history) and lots of family visiting.  J had to coach soccer (and work), but we could skip soccer (and preschool) and stay for a few extra days just playing.  And so we did.

THE "CREEK"
(A small 2' wide creek that comes out of the side of the mountain when it rains.  It was the first place we went when we got there.)

1.  Water right over the top of the boots.  He walked the whole way home with them filled.  We just go with it.

2.  The bridge (freshly built).

3.  Swinging.

4.  A bat cave.  (They love to fill their backpacks with a few favorites and the we find a spot to let their small adventures unfold.)

THE VIEWS

1.  The woodpile.

2.  The mossy trees.

3.  The backyard.

4.  The farm (every trip to "home" has an obligatory "Gator" ride through the woods and around the farm right next to our house where my dad grew up.)

THE PARTY
(My Dad comes from a family of 12 children--7 boys and 5 girls.  That's a lot of people when you add in aunts, uncles, cousins and now--cousin's kids.)

1.  So fun to see my aunt and uncle visiting from Hawaii.

2.  A trip to the woodpile for the supplies to keep the fire going.  It's the middle of May.  There were snow flurries.  (Bah!)

3.  The slideshow.  Hilarious.  The outfits.  The scarf that they all seemed to wear at some point.  The hair.  The stories.  They never get old.

THE WOODS

1.  Tree climbers.

2.  Wood carriers.

3.  House builder.

4.  Defender from enemy robot crows (of course).

THE PEOPLE

1.  Aunt Debra--who has an avid fan base among the small crowd--and Grandpa who has an equal following.

2.  Aunt Joanna and her pirate teammate T.

3.  Beza LOVES Aunt Joanna.

4.  GrammyKathy and Aunt Annie.

(Not pictured--Nana and Pop who came to visit on Mother's Day. :)  And Aunt MB BECAUSE--our newest nephew was born yesterday!!!  Can't WAIT to meet him!)

1.  Sisters.

2.  Mother's Day Tea.  (Hand massages, back rubs, singing, paper crowns and bracelets and yummy breakfast baskets--awesome Tuesday treat.)

3.  Pointillism (ish) with primary colors.  ("Dots like Seurat.")

4.  Hiding veggies in muffins.

5.  You can always tell when Emily has been here. :)

The True Story of Fairy Houses and Fireplaces

Inspired by THIS fairy house (from The Nesters post), we built our own version over the weekend.

Special feature--an indoor swing.

A lot of hot glue was involved. ;)

(And the true story?  At the end of the day, M put it in the garage (on the step in the garage to be exact) and J accidentally trampled it.  It's awaiting some repairs from the magical hot glue.)

And the true story of the outside fireplace?

Poison ivy.  Sprouting up all over in those woods.  (Bah!)  And vining itself right up the fireplace tree.  No good.

So, it got moved to a poison ivy free zone.  (With added counter space--just what every outdoor kitchen needs. ;)

Loving these beautiful May days.

Top Five of the Week

1.  A whole weekend ago--a much celebrated visit from Nana & Pop, Grammy Miller, Aunt J and our newest family member. :)

2. May Day--A fun celebration with 10 of our little friends painting GIANT cardboard boxes in the backyard.

3.  Watching the trees blossom.

4.  A Friday at an unexpected park.

5.  Signs of Spring  (The snapping turtles have been on the move out of our dried-up pond--we might be in need of some rain.)

(And have you heard?  The cicadas are coming!  Yikes!)
