Their Favorite

(And mine only because I love watching them have fun.)

We had our first "beach" day of the year today!  It was a Friday Fun Day!  They had a blast.

You have no idea how I have agonized over the decision to join the "waterfront" this year--oh, I remember all of the stuff and heat and sand and tears and tantrums from last year and couldn't decide if it was worth it or not.  But, they LOVE it and it is a great place to learn how to swim. :)

Within her first few minutes in the sand she was muttering "happy" to herself.

M spent most of the time plugging her nose and practicing ducking her head under the water.  She also built this castle.

T spent his time dipping the back of his head in the water and telling me he was going under (he thought the back of his head counted as his whole head.).  He built this castle.  Don't worry, he couldn't find it either. ;)

When she wasn't filling her bucket with watery sand, she was "wimming" like this.  Girl LOVES water!

Here's to many more fun days at the beach/lake/pond! ;)

Permanent Markers on My Towels (And When Decorating Goes Too Far)

I saw this cute idea on Pinterest and thought I would give it a try.

Here it is.  :)

Whimsical, eh? ;)
I like it.  But...

The other day I was looking at these twisted vine trees on the mantle (see them in this post) and I thought maybe they looked a little wintery.  It is anything but winter.  Yet, I really like their height and balance so my creative juices took a little turn off the beaten path and thought that it would be a good idea to wrap them in a light, airy summery fabric.  Right.

Yes, yes, (sigh) I basically mummified them.  I am choosing to pretend these exude the essence of carefree summer and that they don't, in fact, look like they are decked out in their Halloween finest... :)

Here's to creativity! :)

Goodbye to the Secretariers

After a whole year of getting to spend the 6-minute drive to and from school with M, Wednesday was our last day.

And for a whole year, M has been hanging out with the secretaries ("secretariers") in the office at the end of each day.

Sweet Mrs. C. always had markers and an endless supply of sticky notes for M to draw a picture.  And bless her heart, she let M decorate her desk all year long.

On the last day Mrs. C had a gift bag with fun crayons and paper with a really sweet note for M.

We love and will miss our "secretariers."
(It took a long time, but with a lot of persistence, they finally won Beza's heart, too. :)

When the First Day of Summer Starts with Tossed Cookies

You just make the most of it. :)

Poor Bez started the day not feeling so well so she convalesced in the air conditioning, eating her weight in Cheerios, while the rest of us braved the crazy heat and had a super fun first day of summer. :)

It was a fun day of...
last day of school
sandwiches with no crust
ice cream
umbrella shade
water slides
blazing temperatures (nearly 100)
water toys
a free pass from rest time
freshly shampooed, sleepy heads
great expectations for a fun-filled summer.

An entire watermelon devoured in less than 2 hours.  They were very well hydrated. ;)

Beza was feeling much better after her afternoon snooze. Whew! :)

And that is good news because little girl has a fun birthday in just 2 days!

Happy First Day of Summer!

Can't Wait

To read this...

Also, we have been listening to a few songs from the newest Slugs and Bugs CD.
Loving the "I'm Adopted" track and the peeps have been cracking up about the "Under Where" song all day. :)  They are also huge fans of "Pajama Drama"--maybe because it's all too familiar. :)

Listen to samples HERE.

Happy Tuesday!

Umm...A Slightly Interesting Obsession :)

So...earlier this Spring I began to notice a little group of turkey vultures hanging out on the power lines on the way to M's school.  They were usually sitting in that creepy, arms-raised-like-a-scene-from-a-scary-movie pose.  And their heads are just plain gross.  They were creeping me out.

Then, one day, after dropping M off, I noticed a huge flock of giant birds flying in a tornado form.  It warranted a quick google search.

I discovered that it was probably a kettle (official vulture-talk for "group of circling vultures") of vultures rising on a thermal.  It totally means that vultures don't waste time beating their wings to soar to high altitudes--they just find pockets of rising hot air and ride the wave.  Now, that's kind of cool.  They were starting to win me over. ;)

Google also told me that the creepy pose is called the "horaltic" pose and they do it to warm up.  Also, they "go potty" on their legs to cool off AND because they have these seriously insane stomach acids that kill everything (even stuff like anthrax--no way), so the whole potty business takes care of any lingering germs on their legs.  Gross--yes--but simply fascinating.

Needless to say, I (and consequently everyone in my care) kind-of love watching for the latest wake, venue or committee of vultures.  Who would have ever guessed? :)

In Case You Just Want to Know More (I mean, who wouldn't? haha ;)

Happy Vulture-Spotting! ;)

Eat Your Carrots and Coconut

These small people are fans of coconut.
Monkey see, monkey do.

Today we chowed on these Energy Bites.

They are also fans of carrots.  Raw carrots.  Raw whole carrots.  The organic ones seem to be the sweetest.

And lately I've been shredding those carrots, adding some coconut and creating this yummy Carrot Coconut Bread (minus the icing.)

Mmmmm....I think it's time to go finish that last slice. :)
Happy Monday!

Funnies: When Yellow Isn't Yellow

You know how Beza has just started talking a ton?  Well, she's starting to learn colors.  So we say color names A LOT.  Green.  Purple.  Gray.  Chartreuse (I kid).

Anyway, like two weeks ago, I tucked her in for bed and as I was walking out of the room she said, "Yellow."  And as usual, I parroted back, "Yellow!"

I was walking down the steps thinking how funny it was to end the night with a good old "yellow," when it occured to me that she wasn't saying "yellow"--she was saying, "Love you!"  (We had been SINGING THIS SONG a ton.)

Poor girl, nothing like saying, "Love you!" for one of the first times and having someone respond with, "Yellow." :)

Let's play a little game.  Spot T.
He's fast asleep with his head inside of that green bin.

Happy Sunday!

The Rain Catcher and Other Weekly Bits

1. Dude has become the self-appointed official rain-catcher.

2.  He walks when he talks.  (I think the new ankle socks make him look older.)

3.  The fruits of his labor.  1cm of rain water.

4.  Yesterday the mockingbird was back for his signature favorite--homemade banana bread.
(T is trying to see it through his new, real binoculars.  Not quite sure they're needed this time.;)

5.  We've been munching on our potted lettuce.

6.  Tuesday tea with homemade coconut macaroons.

7.  Girl has become a 4-leaf-clover finding expert.

8.  How you know your once-upon-a-time tea drinking spouse has crossed over to the dark side. :)
(That's a 24oz-er.  Crazy!)

9.  When you're almost two you can swing on a big-kid swing.  And look ridiculously cute doing it.

Although I would argue that this view is quite possibly the best. ;)

10.  She thinks she's hot stuff in her "Sun. Casses."  She just might be.  :)

Happy Wednesday!
